Het is inmiddels drie jaar geleden dat Conjurer zichzelf presenteerde aan de Britse metalscene. De club tekende bij Holy Roar Records en blies alle sceptici weg met hun performance tijdens het 10-jaar-Holy-Roar feestje. Wéér een band dat denkt de volgende Iron Maiden te zijn? Jazeker, al zijn deze heren te jong om Eddie’s hoogtijdagen mee te hebben gekregen.
Anno 2019 heeft Conjurer er net een Amerikaanse tour van een maand op zitten, worden ze door Trivium aanbevolen, rangschikte Kerrang debuutalbum ‘Mire’ als top 20 van 2019 materiaal, komt Download festival eraan, speelden ze indrukwekkende shows op Complexity en Roadburn Festival en staan ze met Ithaca bovenaan de poster van Smashfest, dat deze zaterdag 11 mei plaatsvindt te Capelle aan den IJssel. Al met al, hoog tijd om de Engelsen beter te leren kennen voordat ze terug zijn in Nederland. Maartje Buise (oprichter Smithsfoodgroup Records én Smashfest-organisator) voelt Conjurer-bassist Connor Marshall aan de tand.

Interview in het Engels:
Q: Hello! So, you’re a band for over three years now, but have just completed your first month long tour together. And in the USA, no less! Any tips for surviving a month in a van?
C: First is food! People tend to get very moody when they are hungry. Luckily, in America, there’s plenty of options but yeah, make sure you’ve eaten or at least know when you’re going to eat, so you don’t have to worry or get moody about it.
Then the other thing is probably just pull your weight and communicate if someone isn’t. We didn’t really argue on tour but we probably all had a point where we were annoyed at each other for not pulling our weight in some regard. Basically make sure all band stuff is done and then cover your own ass. We had that figured out by the end though luckily!
Q: What if instead of an American tour you were send to an uninhabited island and it somehow did have a record player, what would you bring?
C: I honestly hate these kinds of questions because I’m awful at choosing favourites and things like that, but currently at this moment in time I’d say:

Carly Rae Jepsen – Emotion (specifically the deluxe edition)
Periphery – Hail Stan (just very hyped on the new Periphery album)
Bon Iver – Bon Iver (for the softer times)
Press To Meco – Here’s To The Fatigue (for all the catchy sing alongs)
Q: We’re looking forward to having you back in The Netherlands, but what events are you looking forward to for Conjurer in the future?
C: We’re very lucky to have a bunch of cool stuff coming up. One of the main things would probably be Download Festival, that’s always been a dream to play. And then we’ve got some cool tours coming up at the end of the year but I can’t say a lot there yet.

Q: What is the craziest thing a fan has done for you, so far?
C: A lovely man in America drove like 4 hours or something ridiculous to come and see us at one show and brought us beers, snacks and weed! It was crazy, then the same guy turns up at another show later in the tour, whilst on holiday and brings us more alcohol and donates money to a foundation our drummer Jan supports.

Naast bassist Connor Marshall, bestaat Conjurer uit gitaristen en vocalisten Dan Nightingale en Brady Deeprose en drummer Jan Krause. De muziek van de band is verkrijgbaar via Holy Roar Records. Later dit jaar brengt het label ‘Curse These Metal Hands’ uit, een samenwerking tussen Conjurer en Pijn.
Smashfest vindt plaats op zaterdag 11 mei te Capsloc, Capelle aan den IJssel en wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Smithsfoodgroup DIY. Naast Conjurer spelen onder meer Ithaca, Arson, Attan, Take No Prisoners en To Live Among Wolves. Check het Facebook-event voor meer informatie.
Conjurer en Attan spelen vrijdag 10 mei ook samen in Merleyn, Nijmegen.
